French standard - 1908

      General Appearance: A dog of good size, hardy and strong, well constructed. Double dewclaws on both rear feet.

      Height: 211/2 to 251/2 inches at the shoulder.

      Head: Strong, rather long, foreface flat, stop well-marked, garnished with hair forming beard, moustache, and eyebrows leaving the eye uncovered or lightly veiled. The nose is always black.

      Teeth: Strong, white, adapting perfectly.

      Chest: Deep and well descended.

      Back: Straight. Croup slightly inclined.

      Legs: Well muscled, good bone, regular alignment.

      Feet: Strong, black nails, tough pads.

      Tail: Entire, forming a hook at the end, and preferrably carried low.

      Ears: Short, not flat if they are left natural, carried erect if they are cut.

      Hair: Long, wavy, not curly (rather like that of a goat).

      Color: Slaty black (black with some white hairs) dark gray, iron gray, light gray, tawny, charcoaled tawny, tawny and gray. (For working the deeper colors are preferred.)

      Severe faults entailing disqualification:

      • Short hair on the head
      • Lack of double dewclaws
      • Docked tail
      • Light nose
      • Wall-eye
      • Very curly hair.

      Note: It was decided at the General Meeting that 2 or 3 cm over the maximum would be allowed for outstanding subjects since the larger size would be beneficial for breeding. There would be no allowance for under size.
